Hello everyone! In this spooky season of halloween, I'm gonna talk about my favorite spooky/scary movies. Now, I'm not gonna lie to you, I'm not the biggest fan scary stuffs. I don't really like movies with actual ghosts in it, I prefer movies that fuck with your mind and make you question your existence. That's my type of scary movies, and you'll see in a moment that most of the movies here have that element in them. So without further a do, let's just jump right in!
DISCLAIMER : There will be some spoilers for the movies that are mentioned here
- Carrie
So, I watched the 2013 version first that had Chloe Moretz and Ansel Elgort and I actually enjoyed the movie. It was sort of my introduction to sci fi thiller genre and showed me that scary movies aren't always about ghosts. A few months ago, I watched some parts of the original 1976 version, and I got the chills. Like yeah the 2013 version was good but the 1976 version had the chill factor. I still remember the chills that I got from just watching Carrie went home from prom with her still drenched in blood and looking throughout the house. Or when she, spoiler alert, killed her mom with all those knives. Creepy.
- The Others
The Others is a movie about In 1945, in Jersey, Channel Islands, the widow Grace Stewart lives in a lonely old house with her daughter Anne and her son Nicholas. Grace lost her beloved husband Charles in the World War II and their children are photosensitive and Grace keeps the curtains and the doors closed to protect Anne and Nicholas against the sunlight. Grace raises her children with strict discipline and following religious principles. Grace hires the strange housekeeper Mrs. Bertha Mills, the mute maid Lydia and the gardener Mr. Edmund Tuttle that have asked for a job. Out of the blue, mysterious things happen in the mansion and Anne claims that there is a boy named Viktor that visits them. Grace unsuccessfully seeks out the intruders until the day she has a revelation about the house and its intruders.

My sister told me about this movie and how it kept her up at night. Not because it was scary or anything but the plot twist fucked with her mind so much that she kept thinking about it. So I watched the movie by myself, to see what's the fuss is all about. And booooyyy, the plot twist killed me. Remember about the boy named Viktor in the synopsis and the intruders that Grace was unsuccessful to find? Turns out, those "intruders" were actually the buyer of their house and they weren't ghosts or anything. The actual ghosts of the story were Grace, her children and their housekeepers. This movie told me not to trust everything as it seems.
- Oculus
I'm gonna try to tell you how the movie goes (keyword : try), because I don't even know what's real and not in this movie.
So basically, the main focus in this movie was a mirror that messed up with your mind, also messed up your family, apparently. Siblings Tim and Kaylie (played by Brenton Thwaites and Karen Gillan, aka my queen) were trying to destroy the mirror while uncovering their past.
That's how I put it into simple words. Because honestly, I forgot most of the things that was going on in the movie, whether this thing was actually happening or it was what the mirror wants you to see. But I went shouting "What the actual fuck is happening?!", because the ending was very in your face. The mirror ended up killing Kaylie, and her fiance (which I really liked), and Tim was charged with murder. See, now you know why I said those things right after the movie finished.
- Insidious 1&2
This movie tells the story of a family and their problems with their new haunted house and their son that's in a coma like state after he fell from the ladder. When the parents checked into the hospital, it was shown that everything was normal physically. And turns out, it wasn't physical at all. They discovered that the son inherited an ability to do astral projection from his father and the son was trapped in another dimension called "Further" that contained all the lost spirits. His father was clueless about this ability because it was wiped out from his mind. So the psychic who was also the one that took care of his father "ability" back when he was younger, encouraged him to do the astral projection in order to bring the son back. Well, the spirit of the son came back, but the father's spirit wasn't. A spirit who always wanted to have his body all along his life finally got what he wanted and killed the psychic too.
The second movie was a little less scary and we dove into the life of the spirit that now was in the father's body. Like how he was treated as a girl by his mother, and so on and so on.
These two movies still give me nightmare to this very day. There were some scene that was very memorable, when "Red Devil" lurking behind the father, when the mother of the spirit slapped her son, even the opening music was so scary. The reason why I put only the first two movies only is because the third and fourth movie weren't as scary and as memorable as the first two. Both of these movies succeeded in making me afraid of going to the bathroom at night. Props to the director and the writers for that.
So that's all from me in this spooky season. I hope you enjoyed it! Look out for some new stuffs in the future from me. And I hope you have a great halloween!
